When we first started going over to our neighbor’s house to feed the orphan cats, we noticed one of them sitting in the window. This cat just kept meowing as if she wanted some help. One of the windows had an air conditioner in it so we opened one of the plastic extensions. And upon arriving the next day to check on the cat, we were very glad to see that she had been able to get out.
On that first day, we had also seen a little black and white kitten with a black mark on the head resembling a French beret. That’s how our little kitten became known as Pierre. Sad to say, that day was the last time we saw Pierre.
We wanted to start the process of bringing some of the cats over to our house. We saw a baby kitten, probably no more than 4 weeks old, hiding in the weeds by the house, with big round eyes staring out at us. It reminded us of a spider, so from then on, the kitten became known as Spider.
Sissey came to us a very unhealthy cat and constantly having loose bowels which took a good 5 years to get her problem under control. During those five years, there was a lot of ups and downs for Sissey not knowing if she would make it or not but to our relief she now can live in comfort and makes a great house cat.
As we made advancement and finally started moving them over to our home, the first night over here she stayed toward the back of our property with her baby Spider beside her. Very slowly we were able to move them closer by making a moveable shelter and moving both shelter and their food closer over time until they trusted us.
June 19th, 2007 was a sad day for us. Spider and BA (Callie’s kitten) had been hit by a car. BA, we lost right away. Spider was paralyzed on the back side of his body, but able to pull himself down towards our house. After rushing him to the vet 11:00 pm, she suggested because of all his internal injuries, it was best he not be saved. Sissey was very upset about her baby boy and did not eat for three days. She was very close to her baby Spider. They both would sleep together in a blue rocker that we had. The blue rocker was left forever empty after that night.
We witnessed firsthand that cats do have feelings. It changed our lives too. From the loss of three cats killed on the road, we knew something must be done. Through research, we decided on an Enclosed Fence for a cat sanctuary, so that the cats could live out their lives in good health and free from danger.
