There’s a story of two people with hearts of gold. In 2006, they started feeding a few feral cats that had lost their caretaker. These two people worked two long months feeding them day and night, slowly reaching down to touch them while they ate. Every time they did touch one, the cat touched would run for the weeds to hide, and the others would react as well. Slowly, they would come back to finish eating. For a month it was allowing them to come around our legs. Then one day the break came. As the cats were being stroked, they didn’t run into the weeds. One by one, they were brought to their new home. Most of them had never been in a house, as they had made their home in abandoned campers on the property.
There was Gulf, Callie, and two kittens that she herself brought over. We named them Lil-D and BA. Crinkles, from a previous litter of Callie’s, Sissey, and her kitten Spider. There also was Black Nose, a sibling to Crinkles, who was too sick to make it before he could even be touched and get him medical help. Pierre, a sibling to Spider, came up missing before we had a chance to bring him to the new home. We also had Hissey and her four kittens to come. All of them joined the family with Jacob, who was also a stray that found his way here.
And that was the beginning of the Stray Cat Bunch – two humans and thirteen cats!
